This is what I also posted on facebook this evening:
What is love?
Is it a feeling?
Is it something we can see?
Is it something we can be?
Is it something we can do?
Is it a choice?
Is it an emotion?
Is it the purpose of life?
Can I love?
Am I loved?
I’m not an expert, and I often think these kinds of things around February 14th every year. Valentine’s Day seems to bring up that rather sensitive topic of “love.” What does it all mean anyways?
People use the word “love” in so many ways.
“ I love ice cream!”
“I love Justin Bieber!”
“I love you (to a friend).”
“I love you (to a boyfriend/girlfriend).”
“I love you (to a spouse).”
“I love God!”
It may just be me, but I really feel like nowadays, people WAY over-use the word love. Think about it. You can’t love ice cream the way you love your mom. Seriously. In general, words have way too many meanings these days. What happened to words expressing enjoyment of things like “I like ice cream,” or “I really enjoy ice cream,” or “I fancy eating ice cream,” or “I relish ice cream.” People don’t even have these words in their vocabulary. Everyone just uses a thesaurus on their English papers so their teacher won’t put red marks every time they use the same word. Otherwise, they would use the same word. But that’s beside the point. “Love” is meant to be more special than enjoying something. Even Justin Bieber. Yeah, sorry. You might “adore” him, but you can’t really love him they way you would love your mom. Selena Gomez might, but, that is not my area of expertise.
Now that I’ve gotten it out there that true love is deeper than “surfacy” stuff, let’s go deeper.
Love. Most often, the term “love” is associated with some romantic relationship. That’s what the world tell us. I’d guessing that about 85% of secular songs are about love. There are different ways of these songs portraying it, but if you really think about it, songs are usually about loving someone in a romantic way. Is that all there is to love? Seems to me like its pretty lame. There are two categories of love songs. The first is the “I’m falling for you and I love you SOOOOOO much” songs, and then there’s the “we had everything going for us, but then something happened, and we broke up, and now I’m depressed and I don’t know what to do with my life, I’m so sad, I want to dieeeeeee” songs. Is it an endless cycle of falling in and out of love? If that’s all there is, then that’s really, honestly, super lame. I don’t want to fell amazingly happy, then feel like my heart is being torn out over and over again. Yet that’s what we always get in the media. There are, of course, the “happily ever after” songs, but we are taught that that can’t happen. Really? Are you sure? Are you sure it can’t happen?
So, Valentine’s Day. Finding someone to be your “valentine.” Okay, honestly, its stupid. Its like desperate people’s day to find someone. You can get away with asking someone because everyone else is too. It’s lame. Just saying. And if you don’t have someone, you feel lame because you are “single.” But why do we want love in the first place? Remember that terrible cycle I just mentioned?
It’s because we are humans. Not saying that as like “we are human, so we sin, so we want love, which ends up badly,” but as in WE WERE CREATED TO LOVE.
Yes! Its true! We were CREATED by God to love! You know why God created romance in the first place? To give us an idea of what the relationship is between Christ and the Church. Now, don’t get me wrong, Jesus does not have romantic feelings for the believers, but he does love us enough to die for us. Think about it: generally, the only kind of person you would REALLY die for is someone you love more than yourself. Usually, that’s your best friend and the person you love romantically. That’s only normally. So, the point of romantic relationships is for us to see how much Christ loves us. Ever loved someone so much that your heart broke every time you thought of them? That’s how it is with Jesus about US! But even MORE so! He loves us SO much, he actually did die for us! Its INSANE.
So as you go about this Valentine’s Day, wishing you would get a card, a note, or some chocolate, and maybe you will, please please please remember that HS drama is not all there is to love, but that JESUS CHRIST loved you SO much that HE DIED for YOU. He loves you WAY more than any guy or girl could on this earth.
